Picking the Perfect Location

One question that never fails to come up when clients are inquiring about a session is where should we do it?

For the most part, I let clients pick their location(s)! I find it's best as they find what they are looking for and I just go with the flow and work with what I'm given! However, I do have locations of my own that I LOVE to use! I try and keep a variety as every clients' vision of their session is different! If you are stuck on picking a location or multiple here are 5 tips to use!

  1. Pick some place that is meaningful to you or your significant other! When looking back on your images, you'll think this is the spot where so and so proposed, or we found out we were pregnant, etc. Those images show the story of your life.
  2. look for area that have tons of open shade! If it is extremely sunny the day of your shoot, then your photographer will most likely want an area that doesn't have harsh lighting. With harsh lighting comes lots of harsh shadows that don't exactly flatter.
  3. Find a place with leading lines. This refers to one of the basic technical rules of photography. Leading lines are like standing against a fence to where when you look at the photo your eye catches the fence and follows it to the subject- YOU. They are also a great way to show depth.
  4. Find an area that shows texture. This would be like doing a session near a barn, abandoned building or even in the trees!
  5. Pick a location that has a background and foreground. By this I mean like trees in the background with an open field or something similar. An area that is all around aesthetically pleasing. This is my favorite tip! I love to find locations that have multiple little areas to get a variety of different scenes for my clients!

Now you are ready to go location scouting on your own! Keep in mind of the different seasons and how they effect each location!
